Ghani Khan Choudhury Institute of Engineering & Technology (GKCIET), Malda started its journey since 2010 with one of the vision to meet technical manpower requirements of the society and, of the country at different levels. Mechanical Engineering is one of premier disciplines of this Institute towards fulfilling the vision. In its beginning, it starts flourishing through offering the modular pattern of education comprises of 2 years certificate, 2 years diploma and 2 years degree module, and in the academic year of 2018-19, it switches over to offer conventional undergraduate programs, i.e., 3 years diploma and 4 years B.Tech as per present industry oriented curricula of AICTE, affiliated to the West Bengal State Council of Technical & Vocational Education and Skill Development (WBSCT&VE&SD), Kolkata, and the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT), West Bengal, respectively.

               At present, this department is well equipped with its laboratories, workshops, computational laboratories & other necessity besides its leading by the active and dynamic faculty and staff members under leadership of the Hon’ble Director, Prof. P. R. Alapati and his administration. It caters Engineering Sciences mainly in Applied Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics, Design & Dynamics, Thermal Engineering, and Production & Manufacturing. It has grown steadily since the beginning in all fields especially in teaching, and flourishing in research and publication. Together with teaching & research, it trains its students facilitating learning tools (IGNITE: Industry 4.0, Growth, Networking, Innovation Technology & Entrepreneurs Center of Excellence - an Industry & Emerging Technology based software) to know about industry, its products & problems, and the technology developing worldwide – which leads students’ to meet the current industrial needs as well as need of the society. Towards creating a techno-mixed culture in the department, it organizes inter-disciplinary trainings to different parts of the society such as the BSF employees, Nirman Sahayaks & Rural Engineering Mentors etc.

Academic Infrastructure

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is developed in a part of an Academic Building (Academic Block-B) out of 4 (four) such Academic Buildings of this Institute, each of the building covers a carpet area of 3094 sq. m. Along with the class rooms, the laboratories under the various Engineering Specializations such as Applied Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics, Design & Dynamics, Thermal Engineering, and Production & Manufacturing were developed those provide technical knowledge to the students in atmospheres akin to the industries and emerging research. In addition to this there is a central workshop of 881 sq. m area includes Carpentry, Fittings, Welding, Smithy & Forging, Machine-shops those widen field of knowledge at the students’ disposal.

• To impart quality education at different levels (such as diploma, degree including skill trainings) to the students/candidates for enhancing their skill to make them capable of fitting in the country as well as globally competitive market.
